The history of Neethlingshof Estate spans more than 300 years. In 1692, Willem Barend Lubbe, a German settler, began farming the site he had been granted by Governor of the Cape Simon van der Stel on the Bottelary Hills overlooking False Bay. He named the farm De Wolwedans, “The Dance of Wolves”, having mistaken for wolves the packs of jackals roaming the countryside.

At Neethlingshof winemakers worked unhurriedly at perfecting their craft. For more than a century the Estate has been synonymous with the best wine-making traditions of the Western Cape.

Since 2003 Neethlingshof has been following an active biodiversity orientated strategy in its farming practices. We are moving away from a mono culture of vines and in the process we are giving back to nature some of what we took from her in the past.

A family owned and managed Estate, the current owners, Harold and Denise Johnson purchased the farm in 1992, and have committed themselves to a programme of development to realise Zevenwacht’s rich potential beyond wine production.

The estate has a strong commitment to historic and cultural preservation, as well as the active socio-economic upliftment of its workers and their families.

Legend has it, Stellenrust’s ancestral grandfather and founder believed that winemaking is an art –  “it should pulse through your veins” he used to mumble: “you’re born a Da Vinci – you can’t be made a Da Vinci!”

The same methodology still applies to viticulture and winemaking at Stellenrust. Managing partners, Kobie van der Westhuizen and Tertius Boshoff, were both given the opportunity to study a degree other than wine before making the hardy decision to follow their artistic passion for the drink of the gods. Kobie, a qualified accountant and Tertius, a medical practitioner and dentist, joined the family run operation in 2005 and set forth a journey of vigorous growth and discovery for an age old wine brand, her deep rooted vines and her people.

L’Avenir’s rich history dates back to the late 1600s, when the estate was one of the very first sites identified for grape growing by the Cape’s earliest European settlers.

The estate was renamed L’Avenir in 1992 by Mark Wiehe, a Mauritian businessman, who left a career of trading sugar in London to purchase the farm.  This was the start of specialisation of this unique boutique winery. Wiehe appointed former pharmacist Francois Naude as winemaker and the estate swiftly gained recognition for its distinctive Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. 

In 2005, L’Avenir was acquired by the owner of the prestigious Chablis property, Laroche, Chablisien Michel Laroche.

This beautiful farm on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg and barely 12km from False Bay, originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa.

First sold as a 200 morgen sub-division to Cornelis Brink in 1773, Buitenverwachting changed hands all too often. And yet it flourished as a wine farm, due mainly to the 90 000 vines planted in 1825 by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Hendrik Cloete of Constantia.

From 1866, the fortunes of Buitenverwachting were inextricably linked to those of the Louw and Lategan families. One of the most colourful characters was Oom Danie Lategan, whose trademark was the freshly picked camelia he wore on his lapel every day. It was his daughter, Olivia Lategan, who was to forge the link between the Lategans and the Louws. Born at Buitenverwachting, she returned as mistress of the farm when she married George Louw.

Imbued with a sense of history, the Mueller family has retraced the roots of Buitenverwachting. The farm was lovingly restored to its former glory while extensive planting of the most selected of cultivars was initiated. The result was a maiden grape harvest of 100 tonnes – the first harvest the farm had seen in 30 years. An historic achievement that lived up to its name: Buitenverwachting – “Beyond Expectation”.

The valley in which Doolhof lies is blessed with unique and varied terroirs. The microclimates, growing conditions and soil types make it ideal for growing wine grapes. Roughly 40 of the farm’s 380 hectares are planted to vine.

The Estate lies between Bain’s Kloof and the Groenberg Mountain Range. The result is soils that are finer, more balanced and deeper than in the surrounding countryside with clay content evenly distributed. A combination of Malmesbury shale, homogenic Glenrosa and Clovelly soils ensure that the roots are able to descend to four metres or beyond.
