Warwick Estate is a high-end South African winery in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa. The estate has a rich farming history dating back to 1771.

Then a fruit farm, Warwick only emerged on the forefront of South Africa’s wine scene when Stan and Norma Ratcliffe bought the estate in 1964 and started developing the land with an extensive focus on the classic Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Through determination and commitment, Norma Ratcliffe became one of the Cape’s first female winemakers – and one of its most illustrious wine personalities, whose legacy is immortalised in the Warwick “First Lady” range.

The first wine under the Warwick label was released in 1984, then named “La Femme Bleu” – “Blue Lady” as it is known today. Two years later, in 1986, the Warwick Trilogy – a three varietal Bordeaux-style blend – was released and has since been recognised as a truly iconic wine, with multiple vintages adorning some of the greatest wine lists in the world. Throughout the years, Warwick’s wines have won many awards, firmly establishing the brand as a South African icon.

The Grier family, owners of Villiera Wines in Stellenbosch South Africa are highly regarded producers of quality Cap Classique and a comprehensive range of red and white still wines. For many years they have been leaders in the South African wine industry through quality and innovation as well as environmentally friendly practices.They have maintained close contact with France where wine making traditions are strong. Their relationship with the Denois family, who contributed to their leading position amongst bottle fermented sparkling wine producers in the Cape, was critical in the development of their dream to own a piece of France.

Jean Louis Denois moved from Champagne to Limoux where he discovered the wonders of the South of France. He identified the Fenouillèdes in Roussillon as prime “terroir” for top quality reds. Climatically and culturally there are similarities with the Cape and the Grier family felt they could fit in. When a 22 ha vineyard between St Paul de Fenouillet and Caudiès de Fenouillet became available early in 2006 the Griers snapped it up.

The Griers are now producers of a completed range of french wines of big expression where typicity rhymes with character.

To add value, by creating their own wines, they purchased a cellar in St Paul. Their intention was to apply some new world technology and a more market driven approach while respecting the traditions of the region. Few years later, their aim became reality and after few vintages, the Griers learned to know this exceptional Terroir; with the implementation of their knowledge, they are now producers of a completed range of french wines of big expression where typicity rhymes with character.

Gyles Webb bought Thelema, a charming dilapidated fruit farm, in 1983 with the help of his wife’s family. Fruit orchards were pulled out and vines were planted. The manor house was restored and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988. The ripe pure-fruited wines were a revelation to many and it wasn’t long before the romantic tale of a run-down old fruit farm became the success story of an avant-garde winery. By the mid 90’s Thelema’s wines sold out within a month after release, making it one of the most sought-after wine estates in South Africa.

In one of the legends of St Valentine, we hear of a priest who defied the Roman Emperor of the time, and fought against the injustice of keeping couples who loved each other apart because it was believed it would make better warriors out of young men. The story doesn’t end well for St Valentine, and he pays the ultimate price for his belief in life long love and partnership.

We drink a toast to St Valentine. And that’s where we draw the line. Those of us who work at Bryanston’s favourite Bistro Restaurant are lovers not fighters. And while we may be prepared to sacrifice for a perfectly prepared Pork Belly, or a mouth watering Linguine Prawn Pasta, none of us are going to lay down our lives for love and romance 🙂

However, on the evening of 14 February 2019 all the #BistroLove we can muster will be on display in the menu we’ve prepared for a perfect Valentine’s Dinner in the name of love and St Valentine. What’s more, we’ll have La Motte Sauvignon Blanc and Millennium at a price that will ensure you can afford that bouquet of flowers you’ve been thinking about getting 🙂
